We often get asked what should I do with my U.S. flag when it is ready to be retired.  It’s important to make sure your American flag is properly disposed of and there are very easy ways for you to retire them.  The U.S. flag code states “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

How to tell when to retire your American flag?

When the flag is ripped or faded is a good time to retire your flag.  If you are able to catch the flag before it rips too far you can often get them repaired.  This is especially important for larger flags as the price is typically higher to replace them and the price to repair is economical.  This is a great way to get a longer life out of your flag and save you some money.  If the flag is really faded is also a good time to retire it.

How should I retire my flag?

The most dignified way to retire your flag is by burning it in a respectful manner.  Typically, your local VFW’s, American Legions, boy scouts and other organizations typically have flag burning ceremonies.  These are great places to take your flags in order to have them get properly retired if you are not comfortable, or not able to retire the flag yourself.
